Now: The Prince George Community Foundation has been designated as a central agency to accept donations on behalf of the Lakeland Mills Employees and their families. Anyone wishing to donate can do so by donating to the Lakeland Fire Assistance Fund by clicking the red "Donate Now" button at www.pgcf.ca or through the mail at PO Box 1204 Station A, Prince George, BC V2L 4V3 or by calling (250) 562-7772. This comes in the wake of a tragic explosion at the Lakeland Mill site on Monday, April 23rd.

April 1 - May 26: PG’s ‘celebrating diversity’ exhibition is now open at Two Rivers Gallery. The public art artist Aiden Callison visited this past weekend to take photographs of PG residents for his sculpture which will be unveiled at the end of May at the airport. Aiden was able to take approx 140 photos but needs 400+. He will be back in PG at the end of April and I’m hoping that you and your families will be able to be part of the project.

April 27 - May 17: 30th Annual Prince George Speech Arts & Drama Festival.The five-day festival features poetry, prose, storytelling, dramatic scenes and more. Highlights include:
  - the Lollipop League at 9am on Saturday morning in Lecture Room A, where the tiniest tots present poems they've been working on over the last several months
  -Shakespeare Group performances on Monday Morning in Lecture Room A
  -students vying for a berth to the provincial competition in the Intermediate and Senior categories will be performing poetry, prose, and drama on Tuesday in Lecture Room B Linda Moore is one of this year's two adjudicators. Moore says she is looking forward to adjudicating in Prince George, as she returns to the city of her first teaching position 28-years ago.
  Time: 9am until 4:30pm, with evening sessions running from 6:30pm until 8:30pm on Friday and Monday night. This is open to public and admission is free, but donations to the Prince George Speech Arts & Drama Festival Society are greatly appreciated. 
 An Honours performance is scheduled for Friday, May 11th at 7:30pm at UNBC. And the annual Northern Stars Concert, featuring the top performers from the local dance festival, music festival and Speech Arts & Drama festival, is set for Thursday, May 17th at the Prince George Playhouse. Doors open at 6:15pm, the concert begins at 7:00pm. Admission is by donation.

May 3 - June 28: Spring Ultimate Frisbee League. Thursday evenings from 6-8 p.m. at the PGSS fields, across from the YMCA. May 3 to June  28 (Thursdays) Learn how  to play Ultimate Frisbee, the world's fastest growing sport.  Ultimate is non-contact, co-ed, and combines the athletic endurance of soccer with the aerial passing of football and the breakout action of basketball.  Newcomers are welcome and will enjoy the emphasis on spirit and sportsmanship over competitive play.  Cost is only $65 with an early bird rate of $55 if you register prior to April 20.  Fee Includes a beginner skills clinic on April 26 and a day long championship tournament.   For more information visit:  www.pgultimate.bc.ca

May 17: REGISTRATIONS FOR FRANCOPHONE YOUTH GAMES IN BC ARE ONGOING!!! Any French speaking youth are welcomed from May 17 to 21, 2012 to attend this event that is now an annual tradition. It will take place in Maillardville (Coquitlam) at Pionniers School. This is a great occasion for young people to get together and share their interests. May 17: Prince George Regional Heritage Fair. Thursday May 17th 2012 at the Prince George Civic Centre, 808 Civic Plaza, Prince George, BC. The purpose of the Prince George Regional Heritage Fair is to celebrate Canadian Heritage, grow students' (grades 4-10) understanding and appreciation for Canadian Heritage, and allow the community to see how local youth interpret Canadian Heritage and how it relates to them as individuals and members of our community. During the morning of May 17 between 9:30-12pm, students will, in three groups, participate in judging and two heritage activities, one onsite at the Civic Centre and another hosted across the street at Two Rivers Gallery. The Community Showcase will run in the evening from 5:00-6:30pm. Families, friends, teachers and media are welcome to attend. 5:30pm Awards Presentation. May 18: Lakeland Mills Employee Fund Raising Tournament. May 18 6pm - 10pm. Event will take place at Gamescape in the back of the Hart Mall. Cost $15. Come and have fun and raise money at the same time for the Lakeland Mill Employees.

May 19: Plant Sale at St. Marys Auditorium, May 19th from 9-12. The proceeds from this plant sale go to St Vincent De Paul Society. Sale includes such things as house plants, perennials, planter boxes, garden signs, bird houses, garden ornaments etc. Great selections of items. Goodies and coffee will be served.

The Road Race is held the first Sunday of June and at 26 years, is Prince George’s oldest running event. June 10: Seniors Day Sunday, June 10th, 11:00am to 2:30pm. June 23 - 24: Prince George Motocross Association out at the Blackwater Track. Our events are fun filled and family orientated. We have riders as young as 5 yrs old all the way up to the PRO Riders, as well as +40 riders. We are teaching the children safety, and sportsmanship as well as riding in a controlled environment. July 2 - 5: Prince George Fire Fighters to kick off 4th Annual Cycle Tour with Scotiabank BBQ. Prince George Fire Fighters are participating in the 4th Annual Prince George Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund Cycle Tour occurring July 02-05, 2012.  Local 1372 Fire Fighters will be cycling this year to Jasper, Alberta to raise funds and awareness for the BC Professional Fire Fighters’ Burn Fund.  Over the past few years, this event has raised over $20 000. The Burn Fund provides life saving, life supporting, and life enriching services to people all across British Columbia.  Funds raised will help benefit burn survivors in Northern BC as well as throughout the province.
Prince George Fire Fighters and support staff will be donating their off-duty time to help this cause.  We have a couple kick-off events planned:
• Scotiabank sponsored BBQ Friday May 25th in the Spruceland parking lot from 10:00am-14:00pm – BBQ by donation.

July 8: Dog Expo, Sunday, July 8th, 10:00am to 4:00pm. This is the event for dog lovers! Bring your pup out to Huble Homestead show him off in the parade of breeds, and enter your pooch in contests for biggest dog, smallest dog, best dressed, and best trick. Watch obedience and agility demonstrations, talk to pet organizations, and shop the vendors while you let your pup socialize with others. July 28: Pioneer Day Camp, Saturday, July 28th, 10:00am to 3:00pm. Children aged 7-10 will step back in time into the life of a pioneer child at this exciting camp. August 1: Takla Lake Justice Program is requesting for the public to donate their recyclable beverage containers to "Takla Lake Justice Program" at BBK Bottle Depot, 4130 Versatile Pl, Prince George, BC.  The Takla Lake Justice Program is raising money for a summer event in Prince George for awareness on addictions and gangs, we will have different guest speakers /musicians from all over Canada speak about addictions and gangs, and will also play some music. Event will be open to public and is free, there will be community resources available and a concession.  The money raised will go to fund the guest speakers, musicians, for travel, food, accommodations, and their fees. Also for park rental, equipment rental, and portable washroom rental.

August 5 - 6: Homestead Days, Sunday, August 5th and Monday, August 6th, 10:00am to 4:00pm. Celebrate Prince George pioneers and the 100th anniversary of the Huble house with a weekend full of old fashioned fun! Step back into history with heritage demonstrations, games, contests, and entertainment, and meet the Huble family as the Huble house comes to life! August 18 - 21: PNE Star Showdown talent competition 2012. Now open to entries from BC’s hottest performers, this year’s contest welcomes all amateur entertainers to audition. With $10,000 in winnings and over $22,000 in New Image College scholarships. Whether you’re a singer, dancer, musician, magician or stand up comedian – this is your chance to shine. This year’s intensified format includes four days of live competition from August 18th to August 21st. During the semi-finals, competitors will face off for daily 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place prizes in one of three age categories for a chance to go head to head in the finals round. There, they’ll compete against all ages for the coveted 1st place prize and official title as the winner of the 2012 PNE Star Showdown. Solo acts and groups of up to 8-competitors, ages 6 and up are asked to submit an entry form along with a performance video, DVD or YouTube link no later than 4:30pm on June 6, 2012 to audition for this year’s Star Showdown. Entries can be submitted online at www.pne.ca/starshowdown, or mailed to or dropped off at the PNE administration building.

August 25: Pioneer Day Camp, Saturday, August 25th, 10:00am to 3:00pm. Children aged 7-10 will step back in time into the life of a pioneer child at this exciting camp. The day will include dressing in costume, performing homestead tasks, making a pioneer lunch, and having fun the old fashioned way! Pre-register your child by August 17. Transportation is available. September 2 - 3: Summer Harvest, Sunday, September 2nd & Monday, September 3rd, 10:00am to 4:00pm. The last event of Huble Homestead’s regular season celebrates the coming of fall. September 7: Penny Drive! Donate your old discontinued pennies to a good cause! October 8: Old Fashioned Thanksgiving, Monday, October 8th, 10:00am to 4:00pm. Families looking for activities on the holiday Monday are invited to visit the Huble Homestead to enjoy the autumn leaves. A special Thanksgiving lunch menu will be offered, and activities including pumpkin carving, apple bobbing, and scarecrow making will be available for the kids to do, and everyone can enjoy the heritage demonstrations and learning about how pioneers prepared for winter. October 27: Halloween Spooktacular, Saturday, October 27th, 5:00pm to 9:00pm. Visit Huble in the dark for Prince George’s spookiest Halloween haunt! There’s crafts and activities for the kids, plus entertainment, and hot drinks and snacks in the General Store. The brave at heart can tour the House of Horrors, just $3 per tour. Remember this event is outdoors and in the dark, so bring a flashlight, wear waterproof shoes, and dress warmly! Now - June 1: Hear Our Words a Storytelling Competition part of the 2012 Weaving Words Celebration. Have a story to tell? We want to hear it! This writing competition is open to anyone in Prince George and the surrounding communities who is eligible for one of the 8 submission categories. The guidelines are: Your writing must be your own work, unpublished, and not previously submitted. Your writing can be based on real events or fictional. Accompanying artwork is welcome. All work will be reviewed by a panel of talented festival organizers who will select one entry from each category to recognize as part of the 2012 Weaving Words Celebration set for September 26 - 29, 2012.
All winning storytellers will 1) receive a certificate of recognition; 2) share their work on camera for the creation of a keepsake DVD, which will be used during the Weaving Words Celebration and as promotional material; 3) be included in the 2012 premiere edition of the Weaving Words chapbook; and 4) receive autographed books by Festival authors! Additionally, winning UNBC/CNC students will share their work at
a Festival event as well as receive a prize worth $250! Submission Categories: Each age category will be split into two groups based on how you identify with Aboriginal culture: those who are Aboriginal and those who are friends and/or allies. Ages 6-9, Ages 10-13, Ages 14-19, UNBC/CNC Students. All submissions should be typewritten and include the competition cover sheet. Entries must be received by Noon on Friday, June 1, 2012.
